Soda Springs Baptist to Change Its Name
As published in the Caribou County Sun on 11/16/2022
If you walk into the Baptist church kitty-corner from Soda Springs High School on a Sunday morning, you won’t see anything different. There’s still a full worship band with guitars and drums. There’s still smiling faces welcoming you in and kids taking up half the seats. There’s still coffee in the back corner to warm you up when you come in from the cold.
But the one thing you will see change in the coming weeks is the name on the sign on the front lawn. Starting in December, the sign will read Caribou Bible Church.
After many years of being called Soda Springs Baptist Church, the congregation will change its name to Caribou Bible Church this year. “We want our church name to better reflect who and what we are for. We want to share the message of the Bible, not just with the residents of Soda Springs, but the whole county and beyond,” says Pastor Jeff Uskoski.
Though the church has existed since 1963, long-time congregation member Jon Goode says that the church has already been through two name changes in its tenure. The church was started as First Southern Baptist Church, then changed its name to First Baptist Church in the mid-1970s, and later to its current name, Soda Springs Baptist Church in 1995.
The one-story building on 1st North that currently holds Sunday morning service was built in 2000 by a team of gracious volunteers from across the country and local church members. While the old church building on the corner, built in 1991, no longer holds a weekly service, it still hosts numerous monthly potlucks, youth events, and baptisms. Prior to 1991, the church met in a converted house that sat in the space just south of the old church building on the corner.
Caribou Bible Church holds a Sunday morning church service at 10:00am and is led by bi-vocational pastor and local high school math teacher, Jeff Uskoski. The congregation is made up of residents from Thatcher to Bancroft to Montpelier, and everywhere in between, and welcomes folks from all backgrounds. The church also hosts numerous youth programs on Sunday morning.
